For RF frequencies it is important to treat the traces on a board as transmission lines. A controlled impedance can be obtained by calculating the characteristic impedance of the RF trace. The following configurations will calculate the characteristic impedance of a trace track.

The calculations are based upon formulas obtained from IPC-2251, Feb 01. All the formulas are approximations and should only be used as a design guide. If a high level of accuracy is necessary then the structure should be fully simulated with a field solver, e.g. Agilent ADS, AWR Microwave Office etc.
